How Immersive Technologies will Shape The Future of Education
In May 2019, Festival GURU 2019 was hosted in Penang (Malaysia), highlighting the influence and impacts of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 on education.
Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was there and during the opening speech, he said, “Teachers should prepare the students to face the changes brought by the introduction of new and disruptive technologies. The government has financial resources planned to support the teachers in this challenge”.
Director-General of Education, YBhg Datuk Dr. Amin, added: “Teachers should always be prepared to meet the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0”.
The 4th industrial revolution mentioned, involves the production of products by the digitalization of manufacturing. Taking a big leap from the third industrial revolution of adoption of automation, it hinges on the success of automation and enhances it with data and machine learning, changing most of the industries today. So, what’s in it for the education sector?
This presents a myriad of opportunities in which the education sector can leverage on, bringing about changes to the limitations provided by current day education. One such notable limitation is the confinement of learning in a classroom setting.
The second speaker at the launch was Malaysian Education Minister, YB Dr. Maszlee Malik, who also voiced his support about the upcoming changes. He said, “It is also from the school management that integrates and embraces ICT at every opportunity in teaching and learning in the classroom to influence the interest and ability to change existing teaching and learning practices and bring the practice to a better-quality level.”
Certainly, to ensure all these changes are possible, the school efforts to integrate technology in day-to-day education will be the key catalyst of this change.
